XAT is conducted every year in the month of January in a single session. The XAT exam was conducted in the mode of pen and paper till 2017. From 2018 the exam has moved online.
XAT is one of the toughest management aptitude tests, owing to its distinct exam pattern. The XAT exam pattern consists of questions from and Logical and Verbal ability, Decision Making, Data Interpretation, and Quantitative Ability sections. Its Essay Writing test sets XAT apart from other management entrance tests. But from the upcoming XAT 2019 has been dropped from the exam pattern.
In 2016 too, some changes were introduced in the XAT exam pattern:
  1. In the main question paper ( Decision Making, Verbal and Logical Ability, Data Interpretation sections and Quantitative Ability ), the total number of questions were brought down to 78.
  2. Candidates were given 170 minutes to answer the main question paper, 20 mins extra from previous time limit of 150 mins.
  3. To motivate applicants to attempt more questions with accuracy, XAT 2017 question paper was created in such a manner that the top hundred students could complete the test within 170 minutes. The idea behind this is to reduce the low range of scores and encourage good students to do well.
  4. Aspirants were given a choice of not attempting any 13 questions. Beyond this, any non-attempted question carried a negative mark of 0.05 marks per question.
  5. There was negative marking of 0.25 marks for any wrong answer.
  6. In GK section number of questions was reduced to 25. However, the time to answer GK and Essay section remained 35 minutes.
  7. There was no negative marking in the GK section.

XAT 2019 will be held across India at various test centers. The application process is currently underway and will end on November 30, 2018. The exam is scheduled to be held on January 6, 2019.

XAT 2019 Exam Analysis

XAT 2019 analysis will be posted once the exam is over. XAT 2019 is scheduled to be held on January 6, 2019.

XAT 2018 was held on January 7, 2018, from 10 am to 1:35 pm. Being conducted online for the first time, it posed a series of glitches at various centers with the exams starting an hour late and most candidates stuck with computer systems hanging which was disappointing for the students who were already worried about XAT. Technical glitches added to their woes. However, overall the exam went well for everyone.
Here’s a detailed XAT 2018 exam analysis

XAT has always been known to be a difficult test with time-consuming and tricky questions, unlike the CAT. However, the XAT 2018 paper was easier than always. The reduction in the number of questions was good for the applicants viz. better attempts, as XAT has always been a test to be tested on the skill of leaving out difficult questions and focusing on high accuracy.

Section
Number of Questions
Difficulty Level
Good Attempts
QA and Data Interpretation
27
Moderate
18-20
Verbal Ability
26
Difficult
18-20
Decision Making
21
Moderate to Difficult
15-18
Total
74

54-58

Good attempts with 85-90% accuracy would enable the students to meet XLRI’s expected cut-offs.
Let’s look at the section-wise analysis of XAT 2018.
Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation:

The overall section was moderate to difficult with basic questions of Modern Maths and Arithmetic like Progressions, Time Speed Distance and Geometry. Although this section was easier than last few years, the Geometry questions were tricky.
Data Interpretation had two sets only, but they were difficult. One set was tricky and the other was calculation intensive.

Verbal Ability:

This section of XAT 2018 was slightly difficult than usual. The Reading comprehensions influence the paper. The passages were from philosophy. The critical reasoning questions were of moderate difficulty. The key was to attempt them with a calm mind. People who did not invest time in these questions have done well.
Grammar section had easy questions like to vocabulary usage in fill in the blanks, spot the error,  etc. Para jumbles were little time consuming but manageable

Decision Making:

This section of XAT has always been the trick area with close answer options making the student’s life difficult. But this time, it was indeed difficult as compared to the previous year. The situational conventional type of decision making questions command the section with 18 questions and just 3 were based on numerical, analytical approach. This was easy to crack, unlike last year’s calculation intensive set.
The XAT 2018 GK section was fairly doable with a major focus on business GK and economic. This is considered only for XLRI.
The Essay topic was “Ethical Practices and Sustainability: Do they co-exist?”
Overall summarizing the XAT 2018 paper, we witnessed happy faces post the exam.
Good Attempts: 40-42 with 85-90% accuracy.
XLRI cut-offs: BM 33-35 and HR 30-32
XIMB cut-offs: BM 29-31 and HR 28-30
SPJIMR cut-offs: 32-34
